Raja Ampat is huge — far too big to see in one trip. Knowing the best places to visit in Raja Ampat helps you choose the right route and the right number of days.

As a local guide born in Raja Ampat, these are the islands, lagoons and reefs we visit most and the ones guests talk about long after they go home. See them in photos on our Destinations and Gallery pages.

Discover the Beauty of Raja Ampat

The archipelago is made of limestone: over thousands of years, the sea has carved it into mushroom-shaped islets, sheer cliffs and sheltered lagoons. Between them, currents feed some of the most colorful reefs in the world. Nearly every destination below combines a view above the water with something to explore beneath it.

Piaynemo Viewpoint

Piaynemo is the postcard of Raja Ampat. A wooden staircase leads up the hillside to a viewing deck overlooking a cluster of green karst islands set in turquoise water. The climb takes a few minutes and is suitable for most fitness levels.

Tips: go early in the day for softer light and fewer boats, wear sandals with grip, and bring water. The view works beautifully for both wide-angle photos and drone shots (where permitted).

Star Lagoon

Close to Piaynemo, Star Lagoon is named for its star-like shape when seen from above. A short walk leads to a viewpoint over the lagoon's calm, green-blue water. It is usually combined with Piaynemo on the same morning.

Fam Islands

The Fam Islands are our home base on many tours. Quiet homestays sit right above the reef, so you can snorkel straight from your doorstep. From Fam it's a short ride to Piaynemo, Star Lagoon and Rufas Island.

Fam Wall, Melissa's Garden and Napoleon Reef are nearby, and a Fam Village tour lets you see daily island life.

Misool Island

Misool in southern Raja Ampat feels like another world — fewer visitors, towering karsts and hidden lagoons. It takes a longer boat ride from Sorong, so it's best on a dedicated trip like our 4 Days 3 Nights Misool Island Tour.

Love Lagoon

A short trek leads to a viewpoint over a lagoon shaped like a heart — a favorite for couples and honeymooners.

Balbulol

Balbulol is a group of dramatic karst islets with calm channels between them, ideal for photos and gentle exploration.

Jellyfish Lake

An inland marine lake where you can swim among jellyfish that have evolved with a very weak sting. Access depends on local rules and conditions on the day.

Karawapop

A geosite with striking limestone formations that shows off the geological character of Misool.

Yapap

Yapap and its lagoon are surrounded by cliffs and clear water — a peaceful stop often combined with snorkeling at Kale Island.

Arborek Island

Arborek is a small village island known for its welcoming community, handicrafts and a jetty teeming with fish. A village walk and a snorkel around the jetty make a perfect half-day.

Kri Island

Kri is one of the most popular places to stay in the Dampier Strait, with homestays along a white-sand beach. It's a short ride to Cape Kri, Mioskun Island, the sandbank and Friwen Wall — great for both snorkelers and divers.

Best Snorkeling Spots in Raja Ampat

Melissa's Garden

A shallow, colorful reef plateau with dense hard corals — one of the most beautiful snorkel sites near Fam.

Cape Kri

A famous site where currents bring large schools of fish. Snorkeling is best when conditions are calm; your guide decides the timing.

Sawandarek Jetty

An easy snorkel under and around a village jetty, with soft corals and plenty of reef fish.

Yenbuba Jetty

Another jetty site with excellent visibility and lots of marine life close to the surface.

Fam Wall

A wall reef dropping into blue water, covered in sea fans and soft corals.

Blue River

Near Waisai, Blue River is a freshwater river with remarkably clear blue water flowing through the forest. On our Dampier Strait tours we travel there by car from Waisai on the final day, before the boat back to Sorong.
